FGM comprises a wide range of\u00a0procedures: the excision of the prepuce; the\u00a0partial or total excision of the clitoris (clitoridectomy)\u00a0and labia; or the stitching and narrowing\u00a0of the vaginal orifice (infibulation).\u00a0The number of girls and women who have\u00a0been subjected to FGM is estimated at around\u00a0137 million worldwide and 3 million girls per\u00a0year are considered at risk. Most of the females\u00a0who have undergone mutilation live in 28\u00a0African countries.<\/p>\n<p>International migration has led to an increased\u00a0presence of circumcised women in Europe and\u00a0developed countries. Healthcare specialists\u00a0need to be made aware of and trained in the\u00a0physical, psychosexual, and cultural aspects\u00a0and effects of FGM and in the response to the\u00a0needs of genitally mutilated women.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gerd Gross &#8211; Stephen K.
